See us in City South Magazine!

Huge thanks to editor Donna Trump and her staff for featuring our company in the November 2017 issue of City South magazine – a story about our work with businesses and organizations working to make a positive social impact. City South debuted in August as a new Tiger Oak community publication that covers much of Minneapolis and St. Louis Park. It’s a great guide to culture, news and happenings in both communities.

Max's Gift Guide Just Released

Each year, Max’s creates a holiday gift guide featuring the shop’s gorgeous jewelry modeled by “real people,” which is code for “people who aren’t professional models.” This year, we suggested that the models be Twin Cities performance and visual artists, photographed in the spaces where they create their art. It was one of our favorite projects, producing the photo shoots and photographing artists including cover model and dance legend Sally Rousse, Cole Rogers and Carla McGrath who co-founded Highpoint Center for Printmaking, fashion designer Gina Moorhead, and many others. Ellen Hertz, owner of Max’s, and project art director Molly Slough, named the gift guide “a celebration of art” in honor of the talented artists who participated in the photo shoots and the amazing jewelry artists whose pieces were worn by the models. The gift guide highlighted the work of many of the 50 artists whose work is represented at Max’s. These are some of the industry’s most talented designers and their pieces are truly works of art on their own – and Max’s is the only place in the Twin Cities where you’ll find their work.

Some Work

Cookie Cart

We love cookies and we love Cookie Cart! We have worked with this amazing organization for several years. This year marks Cookie Cart’s 30th anniversary and one of the many exciting things happening is the upcoming opening of the organization’s St. Paul bakery, on Payne Avenue on the city’s East Side.

Max's

Each February, Max’s becomes Valentine’s-central with its fabulous collections of jewelry and gourmet chocolates. The shop celebrates by hosting a Valentine’s party with guest appearances, chocolate tastings, and more. What’s not to love about that?

Hat Make

Celina Kane is a talented Twin Cities milliner who studied her craft in Paris and New York before launching her Hat Make line. Her hats are as much a statement about culture and politics as they are style. Celina is also the co-founder of BESPEAK, a pop-up sale featuring work created by women artists.

Who We Are

Pam McCarthy-Kern, Co-Founder

A native of a small town in Kansas, Pam relocated from Kansas City to Minneapolis just in time for the legendary Halloween blizzard. She is a seasoned marketing communications strategist and events professional who worked in management at companies including Aveda, Macy’s and NordicTrack before heeding the call of life as a small business owner. Pam has crafted media relations campaigns on local, national and international levels, and planned and designed events for companies and nonprofits large and small. She is also the founder of a nonprofit that raised funds for community programs serving the homeless in Kansas City. Pam spent her early years living on a farm, growing up in a family that included small business owners and civil servants who were deeply committed to community service, instilling in her a passion for volunteerism and giving back. She is proud to be a football mom and in her spare time enjoys cheering her son’s team, tending her urban garden, and cooking yard-to-table meals for family and friends.

David Kern, Co-Founder

David is a marketing specialist, website developer and award-winning photographer whose work behind the lens has taken him on assignments from NYC and European fashion shoots to war-ravaged Somalia and parts of Asia. He has a business degree in Marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and he studied philosophy in graduate programs at the University of Chicago, the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, and Boston University where he was also a graduate teaching assistant. David’s Midwestern upbringing as the child of small business owners gave him an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age. He has always been passionate about humanitarian causes and believes in giving back to the community. Through the years he has volunteered for numerous organizations, from his son’s schools and youth sports programs to global relief mission efforts. In his downtime, David enjoys reading, relaxing with family, watching his son’s football games, and baking and perfecting his Indian curries and Thai street noodles.

Dawn Manges, Design Collaborator

Dawn has worked in the field of design for many years, initially as an architect where she worked on high profile projects including the AT&T tower in downtown Minneapolis. She later turned her creative focus to graphic design and art direction where she specializes in print, brand identity, exhibits, web, signage, and interpretive and environmental graphics. Dawn has won numerous awards for her work, including a chair design award at the Minnesota Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, an ADDY from the Santa Fe Chapter of the American Advertising Federation, and two design awards from the American Alliance of Museums. Her client work includes museums throughout the U.S. and numerous businesses and nonprofits. Dawn lived and worked in Minnesota for many years before following her dream of living in the mountains. After living in Santa Fe for several years, she now resides in Fort Collins, Colorado where she enjoys spending time outdoors, biking and exploring the mountains with her family.
